I Am Legend
dir. Francis Lawrence
2007

I created previsualization animation for two big sequences in I Am Legend, the biggest film ever to shoot in New York City as part of a team from Proof, Inc. I worked directly with Francis Lawrence, as well as the vfx supervisor Janek Sirrs and the stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong (who used to be the stunt double for Indiana Jones).

What is previsualization animation?
We build scale versions of the characters and sets inside the computer and create virtual cameras with lenses that match exactly the lenses in the kit being used by the director of photography. I then work with the director to block in the actions, design camera moves and cut together a rough edit. We are able to do quite a bit of experimentation before anyone even walks on set. The previz becomes a kind of foundation version of the sequence upon which the director improvises and improves throughout the rest of the filmmaking process.
