Oscar The Octopus and his Jellyfish Friends
2008
208' x 17' (in total)
My partner Eve Biddle and I designed these murals on the exterior of PS 54 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
This project, like the Jackson Heights Murals, was created with NYCares – an organization that connects volunteers with projects around the city that need some extra hands.
The pattern through which the sea creatures swim is inspired by the style of hoodie sweatshirts that folks in the neighborhood were wearing at the time of the mural’s design. We selected images that compose the pattern from drawings made by the students in the school.
If you’d like to see the murals in person, they are located at the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Hart Street in Brooklyn, right near the Bedford-Nostrand stop on the G train. Check out the map below.
Coincidentally, my grandmother and her six siblings grew up only a few blocks away on Stockton Street.
