My Super Ex-Girlfriend
dir. Ivan Reitman
2006

I created previsualization animation for several sequences in My Super Ex-Girlfriend. I worked directly with Ivan Reitman, vfx supervisor Erik Nash and the folks from Digital Domain. For the shark sequence they put a big poster on set with the frames from my previz to use as a guide, which was pretty cool. Unfortunately the shot with the double-decker bus at the end didn’t make it into the final cut. Maybe they ran out of money.

What is previsualization animation?
We build scale versions of the characters and sets inside the computer and create virtual cameras with lenses that match exactly the lenses in the kit being used by the DP. I then work with the director to block in the actions, design camera moves and cut together a rough edit. We are able to do quite a bit of experimentation before anyone even walks on set. The previz becomes a kind of foundation version of the sequence upon which the director improvises and improves throughout the rest of the filmmaking process.
