Twilight: Eclipse
Directed by David Slade
2010
Previs Supervisor, Proof, Inc.
I supervised a team of five artists to create previsualization animation for two major sequences in Twilight: Eclipse.
The director and the studio wanted this film to have bigger action sequences than the others in the series. Our job was to help make that action exciting.
We surveyed forest locations in British Columbia, rebuilt them using a DIY digital scanning technique, and animated the teen heartthrobs and werewolves kicking ass.
I edited both sequences.
What is previsualization animation?
We build scale versions of the characters and sets inside the computer and create virtual cameras with lenses that match exactly the lenses being used by the cinematographer. I then work with the director to block in the actions, design camera moves and cut together a rough edit. We are able to do quite a bit of experimentation before anyone walks on set. The previs becomes a foundation for the sequence that the director can then build upon throughout the rest of the filmmaking process.
